Auckland's West Coast

[ Whatipu New Zealand. Looking towards the Manukau Harbour Heads ]

Whatipu - West Auckland. The Manukau Harbour heads. Standing on the black sands looking south.

The foreground rocks and cliffs are the North Head, while the distant cliffs are the South Head of the Manukau Harbour.

While the Manukau Harbour is very large, only small coastal shipping and fishing boats can cross the treacherous shifting sand bar across the entrance and navigate the narrow channel winding up to the Port of Onehunga.

Taken 11th June, 1960. (Late autumn).
